SilverLight —MS new mediaplayer

oday at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters conference (NAB2007), Microsoft and Adobe have gone tit for tat with product launches that directly target one another. Our previous post covered Adobe's launch of a new Internet video solution, that competes with Microsoft's Windows Media Player. And Microsoft has fired right back, unveiling Microsoft Silverlight - a re-branding of their WPF/E technology (Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere). In its announcement, Microsoft describes Silverlight as a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering media and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web. So basically it is Microsoft's equivalent to Adobe's Flash.

Also, as is usual when Microsoft launches a new media product these days, they have brought on board a number of high profile partners. In this case they include Akamai Technologies Inc., Brightcove Inc., Eyeblaster Inc., Limelight Networks, Major League Baseball and Netflix Inc.

More details on Tim Sneath's Microsoft blog. Ryan Stewart also has a good write-up, noting that "Silverlight finally gives Microsoft an easy web video solution."

What are we to make of the sudden increase in Microsoft vs Adobe competition? The world of RIAs is increasing in importance, as Internet users seek out better "experiences" - both in the browser and outside it, and both online and offline. While Google is happy to utilize Ajax in the browser as its RIA weapon of choice, Microsoft and Adobe are busy battling it out in the 'richer' products - which either extend the browser or utilize the desktop.

Leaptag—reereader

What is LeapTag?

When people surf the Internet they are often trying to discover something. It may not be as specific as a news item or a book. Often they are simply interested in something or other and trying to find out more about it. Sometimes these interests are short-lived, for example a sporting event like the World Cup or the Triple Crown race. Other times the interests may be life-long, like fly-fishing, cooking or politics.

LeapTag was introduced at DEMOfall 2006. Click here to see the video presentation.

LeapTag allows you to define the things you’re interested in using tagging. For each interest you create a tag for, LeapTag will produce results that include news and blogs, and books. Even the ads you see will be relevant to your interest.

How does it work?

LeapTag runs in your browser tool bar. As you travel the Internet you simply tag pages to associate web content with your interests. We call this dynamic tagging and it enables LeapTag to create a contextual definition of your interests. When LeapTag returns your results, you further refine your definition by voting positively or negatively on the items you see. This effectively says to LeapTag “I like this, bring me more results like this” or “I don’t like this, don’t bring me anymore like that.” This tagging/voting cycle teaches LeapTag and the more you use the tool the better and more relevant your results will become.

It’s nice to share.

You will be able to use LeapTag to share your tags with friends. When you share a tag, each person you invite to join your group can tag the sites, articles etc. they are interested in, which will collaboratively grow the overall quality of the shared tag. Each member of the group can also comment on their votes, allowing the group to communicate about the items they tagged and the interest you are building together.

How do I get it?

LeapTag is now in beta. We still have a number of features we want to implement before we fully release the product and we are interested in getting feedback from active users. To participate in our public beta, download now.

LeapTag is advertising supported and free to consumers.

Divshare

It’s time for another big upgrade — today we’re proud to launch DivShare Video. Every video you upload to the site will now be converted to a quick, convenient Flash video that you can watch directly from the download page or embed on your own blog, web site or profile. We’ve loaded DivShare Video with a lot of cool features — here’s a quick list:

Download your original video
We’re a file host at heart, so you will always have access to your original video file in addition to your new Flash video.

Huge, high quality vids
We encode your videos at high quality and display them at a width of 560 pixels, making them bigger and badder than most other videos on the web.

The easiest uploads around
There’s no extra work involved in creating your Flash videos — just upload the file to DivShare, and we’ll recognize it as a video that fits our specs. The system will automatically start the conversion, and you’ll get an e-mail (as well as see it on the download page) when it’s done!

Anonymous uploads, 200 MB file size, and all the DivShare standards
Your videos will enjoy the same freedoms as all your other DivShare files — there’s no video time limit, and you can upload any source video up to 200 MB in size. And, of course, you can upload and create a Flash video without even registering for an account.

We’ll go into more detail about converting your current vids and fill you in on a few things we’re still working on during this weekend’s Beta test. But first, get started by checking out this sample vid:

Not bad, right? We know that a lot of you already have videos online — in fact, a large portion of our most popular files are already videos. To create a Flash version of a video that’s already on DivShare, just log in to your account and visit your video’s download page. From there, you’ll see a dialog with a link that says “Convert My Video Now” — click that, and you’re on your way! Conversion will take a few minutes, and you’ll get an e-mail when it’s all ready to go.

And, as we mentioned, we’re releasing the video service in Beta for the weekend — which means that we know it’s not 100% done, but we want you to start playing with it and give us your feedback while we finish things up. If you have ideas, suggestions or errors to report, hit us up in the comments below. In the meantime, here’s a list of stuff we’re working on now:

YoName—social search engine

OK. Let's say you're at the club and you're flirting with this total stud (and he is way out of your league, by the way), and, boom, you score digits. The problem is, genius, that the next day they're still in the pocket when you toss your jeans in the wash. You remember his name, but he's not in the book. I mean, who even uses the book anymore except to order pizza? Exactly. So now what do you do? yoName!

Or let's say you and all your friends were gonna totally hang out after graduation and here it is, two years later, and everyone's either away at college or too busy and you have to pull out the yearbook to even remember your best friend's nickname. How are you going to track everybody down and get the old crew back together? yoName!

yoName turns your computer into a private detective. Look for anyone you want. You can even look them up by a username or an email address! If they're on any of the big-time networks like MySpace or Facebook, yoName will find them. Look up friends, family, ex-es. Look up yourself and see if someone's impersonating you. Or just have fun and look up celebrities, even if the first five entries for Paris Hilton are all "male, 39, single, in Madison, Wisconsin".

So check it out. Here's how yoName works. It's really complicated, so you might want to write this down. You ready? Okay, here we go:

1) Type in a name (or if you want to get real advanced, an email address).

Done. Tah-dah. That's it. Now you'll get all of the matches to that name on network sites from all over the web with just one search!

MySpace? Check.
Friendster? Check.
Facebook? Xanga? Check and check.

Now get out there and track down your peeps!

If you have any questions or problems with the site, you can contact customer support. yoName is basically a couple of entrepreneurial guys out in Encino, California. Their mission statement is something like, "Our goal is to create a site that brings people closer together within the online community, and then to have Yahoo! or Google buy that site from us for $300 billion dollars." Interested in purchasing the site, click here!

AND NOW THE LAWYERS: TERMS & CONDITIONS

DISCLAIMER: yoName does not endorse, support or encourage stalking in any way. Not only is it creepy, but it never works, except in those movies where this kinda geeky-looking girl is totally in love with this hot guy, but he doesn't even know she exists, so after some old person tells her to follow her dreams or something, she and her friends stalk the guy and find out everything he wants in a woman, and she has this total makeover and learns to do some guy things like spit really far, and then they meet and he's like, "OMG, is that you Shelley?" and then they kiss and fall in love, and the girl is always played by Anne Hathaway. So, yeah, stalking only works in the movies.

AND NOW THE LAWYERS (AGAIN): THE REAL DISCLAIMER & PRIVACY POLICY
