Withdraw your money from Paypal and Google AdSense

Here are some good news for bloggers or those who make money online. You now have easier ways to withdraw your money from Paypal and Google AdSense.

Withdraw AdSense with Western Union

If you are staying geographically far from United States, you are probably waiting weeks for your AdSense check to arrive, and another few week for local bank to clear the check before you can withdraw these cold hard cash.

Google AdSense now provides an option, you can withdraw your money through Western Union. Western Union service is available in CIMB Bank as well as some Pos Bank branches. Click here to see a step by step guidance on how you can withdraw AdSense money through Western Union

Verdict

My AdSense check is sent to my Malaysia home address. It took 3 weeks for the check to arrive and another 4 weeks for CIMB bank to clear the check. Withdrawing through Western Union is definetely a turbo approach to convert your AdSense check into cash. However the troublesome part is that you have to get these following information prepared before you can receive your money:

  • Western Union MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number)
  • IC/Passport
  • Amount to received
  • Sender’s Address (Google)

Withdraw Paypal with credit/debit card

I’ve written how you can withdraw with VMI but I guess that not really required now if you have a credit card or debit card with Visa, Visa Electron or Mastercard. There is an option in Paypal that allows you to transfer your money from Paypal to credit/debit card. Daily withdrawal limit is $500, each transaction will be charge a fee of $5. Read here for more information.

Verdict

Malaysian local banks have yet to be recognized or added into Paypal for direct withdrawal. My guess is probably due to the fraudlence caese years back. Now that if you have a credit/debit card, you should not have a problem transfering your money from Paypal. I’m personally not having problem withdrawing from Paypal as I have a Singpore bank account directly attached to my Paypal account.

Diino Free online storage

Diino offers online storage as well as secure email and various other features.

The Diino client software can be downloaded for free from the site, and then it's a case of selecting a price plan or opting for the free version. The features are exactly the same, but the free one (as reviewed here) is limited to 2GB of storage; free users also can't opt out of marketing emails from Diino's maker.

Once logged in, the software presents a folder view, with separate stores for music, pictures and so on. Files can be dragged and dropped into here and, as with all online-based applications, the speed at which they're copied will depend upon your internet connection. During testing, Diino was able to use the full outgoing speed of the connection on our test PCs.

The software can also be set to backup files or folders on the PC and it's possible to specify daily and weekly schedules. Backup speed is roughly the same as that with straight copying of files and the job didn't impact noticeably on the PC's performance. Annoyingly, however, files can't be excluded from the backup, so choose the folders with care.

Files can be shared once uploaded (with the usual caveats about sharing copyright files) and there's even a blogging tool; the latter seems a little pointless to us, but provides an easy way to put pictures online if nothing else.

The final section of the program is an email service. A secure client is offered, which removes the need to use PGP or a similar encryption tool, but there are some drawbacks. You'll need to set up a new yourname@diino.com address, and email is only secure between Diino users. Added to that, we found the server connection to be quite flaky.

However, it's difficult to level too many complaints at this free version of Diino, offering as it does 2GB of secure online storage. If 2GB isn't enough, various price plans are available and start at $99.99 (£51) a year for 10GB, while those requiring 25GB will have to shell out an annual fee of $199.99 - neither of which offer great value for money.

However, most people will either have less than 2GB of important documents, making the free version viable.

In short, as a secondary storage for those 2GB of really important documents Diino is hard to beat.

Create a Multi-Anchored Link with URL Split

Web utility URL Split creates single URLs that direct users to up to seven different web sites. The site is built on an interesting idea, but in practice it could use some work in particular, one would expect to be able to continue following the link chain from each link location (through some sort of proxy hosting). As is you have to continue opening the same link in a new tab until you see that it repeats, which really just causes more ambiguity than it’s worth.

Apple Warns iPhone Could Become iBrick

Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone warranty.

Free videos on mobile with AVOTMV

If you can recall, not long ago there is an application called Joost that allows you to access channels of free videos online by just installing its application on your computer. Now here’s a similar free service, the only difference is that it targets mobile users. That’s right, it means you can now watch free videos anywhere as long as you carry your cell phone with you.

What is Avot MV

Avot MV is a new service from Avot Media. It allows you to watch billons of videos from various video sharing sites. These free videos are located in various video channels and directories form video sharing sites. All you need to do is access and view them with your cell phone.

In general, Avot MV allows you to seach for videos, watch any video you want online as well as keep them in a favorite list (called the myFav playlist) for future replay.

Download and install Avot Mv

There are basically 2 ways you can download Avot MV to your mobile phone, either by

  • Pointing your mobile browser to Avot Mobile site and download directly, or
  • Fill up a simple web form and have the .cab (installation file) sent to your mobile phone. Charges may be apply.

Upon installed, you then open the gate to tones of free videos on the internet. Here are 2 videos to give you some idea how Avot MV looks like.

Supported mobile phones

As cool as it sounds like, Avot MV still does not run on every mobile phone. It requires installation of a mobile application. Avot MV supports Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC and Smartphone mobile devices. Here’s a list of mobile phones that are able to run Avot MV. Folks at Avot are constantly updating the list, so if your phone is not supported for the time being, be sure to check back on the list.

Avot MV is now currently in beta testing but you are encourage to download and use it. Be sure to keep yourself updated with the latest development and news on the Avot Blog.

Verdict

We’ve seen a lot of free video services for the computer but Avot’s approach has just bring good news to mobile users. Now watching free fresh new videos everyday on mobile has become easier. If you are able to access the internet and tired of the short Youtube video clips, Avot MV is definitely a good alternative.

Gmail 2.0

Here are two new features that will be launched either before, or after Gmail 2.0:

Google Gears integration
It was hinted at in recent reports, but there has been no hard evidence of Google?s plans to integrate Google Gears with Gmail until now. Two snippets of text are in the translation queue that, to me, prove beyond any doubt that Gears will be a part of Gmail. The two snippets of text are ?Gears not installed? and ?Disable Local Store? .

Gadget reviews from experts

Given the huge array of gadgets available for almost every aspect of our lives, from the familiar like TVs and camcorders to newer inventions like GPS navigation systems, deciding on a particular item to purchase can be a rather daunting experience for some.

Thankfully, the internet has reduced the time it normally takes to find information and reviews about the latest gadgets and consumer electronics. Better still, instead of having to go from site to site searching online for reliable reviews, you can just get summaries of reviews from review sites, user forums and blogs at TestFreaks.com before deciding which entire review you’d like to read. You can also sort and filter the information to make your search more efficient.

Blogger Play Photo Slide Shows

Blogger Play from its first impression, looks like a gallery of photos. It is a real time Slide Shows of images Blogger users uploaded to their blogs. Theses images come from blogs that are public and listed on the web.

If you are a Blogger users, this can be one good chance for you to get some exposure on your blogs. Make sure images are watermarked clearly with your URL. But if don’ want images from your blog to appear in Play.blogger, there is an option to remove it from the listing.

Spy on your own home via HomeCamera

I was recently asked to look into a home camera surveillance service available at HomeCamera.com.

HomeCamera is designed to be the world’s easiest-to-use home surveillance system. You can use it with any cctv or webcam. It can be accessed from any browser on any OS (including MacOS X or Linux), from any PDA or any mobile phone (no additional software required), worldwide. Use HomeCamera for surveillance, to monitor the kids, the baby, your pet… anything you like.
Motion detection features are included. The system also supports Auto-Record, which lets you set it up to take snapshots or videos all through the day and store them on the server for anytime anywhere access.

To set up the system you need to create a free account, download the free Windows webcam security software and then set it up.The setup of the software was pretty painless. The first order of business after running the app is to add a camera. It asks for the email and password that you registered with and then searches for the camera.

Basically the application works by beaming images (from a PC connected web-cam) of your home directly to your phone. The service is currently costless, though paid subscriptions will be implemented soon (hurry to get it free for a year). After you have registered you can opt to either remotely log-on to your web-cam directly or have the service automatically send you regular updates.

The application also has a clever feature that prompts the camera to automatically take a picture whenever it detects movement as well as an option to allow friends and family to log onto the camera with their own unique log-in details.

In fact, I don?t think my house really needs cameras watching it 24/7,but to most of you, security is a pretty big issue for everyone and home security systems can be expensive.

Get the free software from home camera.

Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine Error

parallels desktop error

Parallels Desktop allows you to run Windows on Mac by opening the OS inside Mac. It is definitely convenient but that don’t make it error free. Here’s an error I encounter days ago, Parallels Desktop won’t start my Windows XP and prompts me this error message:

Virtual machine Microsoft Windows XP cannot be opened since it is already used in another Parallels Desktop windows.

Solution

parallels desktop error

For those of you who encounter the same message, here’s how I manage to re-open my windows in Parallel: Look for the .pvs file (which is most likely under Documents -> Parallels -> Microsoft Windows XP) and remove that file. Restart your Parallels Desktop and your windows should be working fine.

10 Reasons to blog with Mac

First of all, I notice that mac keyboard is different compare to my Windows lap top keyboard. Yeah, they launching new keyboards, very cool, sleek design, I gotta get one. There are no Windows key, no ALT key, no CTRL key. Let me list down the key mapping below:

Mac Key Explanation
Command
Control
Tab
Shift
ESC
Alt/Option
Delete
Up
Down
Left
Right
Return

Its like when I use my Photoshop software to edit image, the CTRL key just be replaced with CMD key. And touche, that Apple new keyboard removed the apple logo key (CMD).

Beside I love nice design wallpaper on mac. All any other blog tools available too on mac, and the speed is superb, I did not feel any lagging when running the applications, on mac. Few cool stuffs on mac:

  1. Mac hardware graphic is superb, as a designer, I can calibrate my display near up to the industrial standard, yes indeed.
  2. Mac Dashboard - F12 - Pretty cool toolkit huh?
  3. You can run Windows and Linux on Intel-based Macs. There are at least three good ways to do it. We can use boot camp (Apple tools which help to installation of Windows drivers) and another way is using Virtualization which running the other operating system in a the same Mac which running OS X. One is called Parallels and has been around since roughly mid-2006, and the other is called Fusion from VMWare.
  4. Mac OS X is the coollest Operating System ever, and It run on solid UNIX platform. Once you go mac, you never go back!
  5. Mac bundle with iLife, a wonderful pack of software for multimedia including photos, music, and video. For website, my favorite dreamweaver still can be run there, iTunes is cool for my iPod, and iDVD help me a lot for producing a good DVD video compilation. And a lot of any other software also compatible with mac, in fact photoshop application run a lot faster in mac.
    • Do you use Microsoft Office? Good news –- it’s available on the Mac.
    • Do you use Adobe Photoshop Elements? Good news it’s on the Mac.
    • Do you use iTunes? Good news –- it’s on the Mac.
    • Do you use MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype? Good news -– they’re on the Mac.
    • Anything else.. still more to come.
  6. No virus, yes, this is the one I like, I save up a lot memory for running anti virus in my background like what I do for my Windows laptop. No poping up blocking from default windows security prompt or so called famous zone alarm application.
  7. The price is cheaper indeed compare to others PC laptop, you cannot get the same price like mac which running Intel Core 2 Duo processor specification.
  8. Interesting Mac Design Evolving, Do I look cool when I use mac to blog? YES. I really like new iMac design.

  9. Another question most of us will be thinking is: “Ok, do I have to re-learn everything?” Reasonable question. And the truth is there is a learning curve but at least 80% is the same or very similar. Most people at home use their computers for word processing, email, browsing the web, playing games and storing their digital pictures. Macs do all this with no effort at all. In Hongkiat.com/mac I will discuss more about using mac for blogging.
  10. Cool application on Mac. A lot other mac application vendor really doing great job for the software design. I am using Delicious Library to keep track of my book records, for disk burning I use damn cool Disco App. Both are example of cool apps that I mean, check out yourself for that for now, I will blog about that soon too.

Lets mac and blog it :-)

Javascripts Resources - 20+ Scripts, Tutorials and Frameworks

Many would initially think that Javascript has something to do with Sun Microsystem’s Java but as the matter of fact, it doesn’t. Javascript was created by Netscape, they previous name was LiveWire, then LiveScript.

Javascript is a programming language that is normally used on the client side. It is easy to learn and pick up. Most Javascripts on websites serve the purpose of encouraging user experience, increase interactivity, functionality as well as web speed. DHTML (Dynamic HyperText Markup Language) is formed with the use of Javascript and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). On the other hand AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is Javascript based web development technique that uses data formatted in XML.

Ext is a client-side, JavaScript framework for building web applications. In early 2006, Jack Slocum began working on a set of extension utilities for the Yahoo! User Interface (YUI) library. These extensions were quickly organized into an independent library of code and distributed under the name “yui-ext.” In the fall of 2006, Jack released version .33 of yui-ext, which turned out to be the final version of the code under that name (and under the open source BSD license). By the end of the year, the library had gained so much in popularity that the name was changed simply to Ext, a reflection of its maturity and independence as a framework. A company was formed in early 2007, and Ext is now dual-licensed under the LGPL and a commercial license. The library officially hit version 1.0 on April 1, 2007.

Photoshop Tutorial - 1 Click photo editing with Action

photoshop action

Here’s a scenario: You need to resize (to smaller) an image, and in Photoshop here’s how we do it:

  1. File -> Image
  2. Enter new Width/Height size
  3. Click Ok

Imagine if you have more images…

If you have tones of images to resize or you want to perform the same action the next day or so. It’s tedious to repeat these steps. Photoshop Actions allows you to record the steps you perform and re-play with one click so you don’t have to keep on doing the same thing again and again.

Using Photoshop Actions

  1. Open up an image you want to resize and bring up the Photoshop Actions panel (Windows -> Actions)
    photoshop action
  2. At the bottom of Action panel, click on the Create New Action button
    photoshop action
  3. Customize the following on the popup dialog box
    photoshop action

Name: Give your action a descriptive name
Set: If you not planning to categorize them, leave it inside Default Actions
Function Key: Create a shortcut for your action.

  4. Click on Record and the button below will turn red. Any action you perform in Photoshop will be recorded.
    photoshop action

With the Record mode on, start editing your photo. In our case, lets resize the image. Choose Image -> Image Size, enter 450 for width (or any other sizes), click Ok. Click on the record button to turn the Record mode off.

photoshop action

Your action recorded should look something like this.

photoshop action

Testing the action

Now that you have an action recorded, lets open up another image that needs to be resize. This time, we’ll just hit the shortcut key Shift F2, or clicking on the Play selection button. You should be able to resize in just one click.

To exercise the usage of Photoshop Actions, you can try recording more complex actions. Mastering actions will help you perform alot of routine Photoshop tasks in shorter time. Have fun.

iPhoto 7.0.2

Fire up Software Update, Mac OS X users, for iPhoto 7.0.2 has just been released. This update addresses “issues associated with publishing to .Mac Web Gallery, rebuilding thumbnails, and editing books. It also addresses a number of other minor issues.” Thanks for clearing up those ‘other minor issues’, Apple.

All we know is: this better fix the renegade Spotlight “mds” process that peaks our CPUs for a few minutes every time we start iPhoto ‘08. There’s nothin’ like shiny new software draining our batteries dry to get us out of bed in the morning.

Customize iGoogle Layout

Now you can edit the layout of an iGoogle tab. Choose between 7 layouts:

(1) single column (this is pretty ugly)
(2a) two equal-sized columns
(2b), (2c) two columns: a narrow one and a wide one (there are two flavors for this layout)
(3a) three equal-sized columns (this is default one)
(3b) two narrow columns and a wide column in the middle
(4) four equal-sized columns

To edit the layout of a tab, click on the small arrow next to its name and choose “Edit this tab”. You have the option to rename it and choose a new template. For now, there’s no option to change the layout for all the tabs at once.
